Causes of Knee Pain and What You can Do about the Problem
Knee pain is a common problem that affects any of the bony structures that consist of the knee joint, kneecap, the cartilage, or ligaments of the knee. Knee problems symptoms can be experienced by people of all ages, but the good news is that home remedies can be used to treat them unless they become severe.
There are lots of causes of knee pain, and the location can vary depending on which structure is involved. If there is an infection, then they will experience swollen knee pain that can be felt all over the knee area. And with the case of torn meniscus is a fracture of a bone, the symptoms can be felt in a specific location.
The severity of the pain can vary, from minor pain to severe pain that can be disabling. Some people will find it difficult to walk due to the instability of their knee. Some people tend to limp due to discomfort from the pain. Some people experience knee pain when running. There are some people who can’t bend their knee at all. There are also cases in which people can’t extend their knee. Other common knee pain symptoms include swelling and redness.
Knee Pain Categories
Knee pain can be grouped into three categories, which are acute injury, medical conditions, and chronic use or overuse.
Acute Knee Injury
Acute knee injury can be a torn ligament or a broken bone. Fractures are caused by direct trauma to the bony structure that results to the breaking of one of the bones in the knee. It is a very painful injury that can interfere in the functions of the knee. Fractures require immediate medical attention. Torn meniscus is caused by the twisting of the knee. The menisci are composed of cartilage that acts as shock absorbers between the bones found in the knee. One of the most common ligament knee injuries is the ACL injury, which is the result of the sudden stop and change in the direction. Lastly, an acute injury can be caused by a dislocation, which requires immediate action right away.
Medical conditions include gout, septic arthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Gout is a form of arthritis that commonly affects the big toe, but it can also affect the knee. Septic arthritis is a condition in which the joint becomes infected, which leads to swelling, fever and lots of pain. It requires knee pain medicine, antibiotics, and drainage treatments. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune medical condition that can affect any joint in the human body, including the knee. It can be painful and disabling.
Chronic conditions include patellar tendinitis and osteoarthritis of the knee. The former is the inflammation of the tendons that connect the patella to the bone of the lower leg. It is a chronic medical condition that is often experienced by people who repeat the same motion. Osteoarthritis is the wearing down of the cartilage in the knee due to age and use.
